Each cleft gate I make is crafted with care, respect for nature, and a love for traditional techniques.

 

The timber I use comes from sustainably managed sweet chestnut coppices in Sussex and Surrey, where the wood is harvested through careful coppicing methods that allow the land to regenerate naturally, keeping it healthy for years to come.

By using the cleft technique — where the wood is split rather than sawn —  the natural strength and texture of the timber is preserved, giving each gate its own unique character. No two gates are the same, and each one reflects the natural beauty and (im)perfections of the wood.

While I offer a selection of standard sizes, I’m also create custom gates to suit specific measurements. My cleft gates are simple, sturdy, and built to last, with a timeless, rustic charm that will fit naturally into any space.
