This is one of my favourite pieces I have ever turned.
I often hear carvers, painters, and other creative souls say they don’t truly create something new, but instead uncover what has always been there—quietly waiting to be revealed. It’s like a fossil hidden deep within stone, longing for the moment it finally sees the light. This piece felt just like that.
Its form emerged not from plans or measurements, but from a feeling. With every curl of wood that fell away, a new pattern revealed itself, as if the soul of the tree was slowly stepping forward, allowing me a glimpse. Whether to keep or remove a mark wasn’t a decision I made alone—it felt as if the gouge moved with a will of its own, led by something deeper. It may sound strange, but it felt as though a part of me became woven into this piece—a part that wanted to step out of me and live on in the wood. And so, I let it. Willingly.
Ash is a strong, durable hardwood known for its light color, straight grain, and excellent shock resistance. It’s commonly used in furniture, flooring, tool handles, and sports equipment like baseball bats due to its strength and flexibility. Ash is easy to work with and finishes well, making it a popular choice in woodworking
