Mineral Collection - Beech barrel

SKU: 0003

Size: height 12cm, width 10.5cm

Finish: Ebonised and treated with unbloiled linseed oil.

This was a playful piece designed to represent a barrel shape, with broad sides to showcase as much of the beautiful grain color as possible. Beech, though not always, can reveal subtle hints of chestnut after ebonizing—resembling hidden treasure within the earth.

Many woodworkers delight in the art of shaping wood into delicate slivers—a craft that takes years to truly master. Yet, I find beauty in leaving the wood thick, allowing its natural weight to remain. In your hands, you can feel its story—the quiet strength, the slow passage of time, the years etched into every grain.

Beech is a hard, pale-colored hardwood with a fine, even grain and smooth texture. It’s valued for its strength, wear resistance, and excellent workability. Common uses include furniture, cabinetry, flooring, and turned objects. Beech also steams and bends well, making it ideal for curved components like chair legs and backs.

Ebonizing is a finishing technique that darkens wood to a deep black, imitating the appearance of ebony. It’s typically achieved through a chemical reaction between iron (e.g., steel wool soaked in vinegar) and the wood’s natural tannins. The process enhances the grain while adding a dramatic, elegant look, commonly used in furniture and decorative pieces.

Display this piece away from direct sunlight, but in a place where the soft glow of sunrise or sunset can occasionally wash over it. This will highlight the mineral-like charm of the wood.

Beech taken from a branch felled for safety reasons.
